About The Art of Story Engagement
NEW: Half-Day, Live, Virtual Training with Dr. Dan Allender
Have you ever found yourself listening to a friend, family member, or colleague share a personal story and felt unsure of how to respond? Beyond just saying, “Wow, that must have been tough,” how can you engage with someone’s story in a way that actually feels helpful?
Join Dr. Dan Allender for The Art of Story Engagement, a transformative, half-day live virtual training where you’ll learn how to engage with stories in a way that is both meaningful and impactful.
In four-part training, you’ll discover the power of story in the context of healing, personal growth, and everyday conversation:
Session 1: How to Read a Story You’ve Been Given
We all encounter stories – whether they’re shared with us or inherited. But how do we read these stories effectively? This session will help you understand how to interpret the stories that come your way, adapting them to your context. Watch Dr. Dan Allender engage with an individual’s story in a pre-recorded video, and then hear his expert breakdown of what he did and why. This part is about learning to listen deeply and adaptively, providing a model for how to process others’ stories with care.
- Content Advisory: The example story shared during the training includes themes of childhood sexual abuse. Some descriptions may be explicit. If this content may be triggering for you, please take care in deciding whether to participate and consider how you might best engage with support.
Session 2: How to Read Your Own Story
Your own story is a mix of beauty, pain, and bias—and that’s okay. In this session, Dr. Allender will guide you through the process of reflecting on your personal narrative, showing you where your story is helpful and where it might need tending. You’ll learn why we tend to embrace certain narratives and avoid others, and you’ll explore the contrast between self-awareness and self-deception. This session will invite you to confront your biases with kindness and courage, learning when to honor them and when to put them aside for deeper growth.
Session 3: Engaging with Story in Everyday Settings
Story isn’t just for therapy or clinical settings—it’s everywhere, in every interaction. Dr. Allender will walk you through practical examples, like an informal conversation in a coffee shop, showing you how to translate themes from stories into meaningful, everyday dialogues. This session will help you see how every interaction, no matter how casual, can evolve into a deeper story that fosters connection, understanding, and growth.
Session 4: Live Q&A
After experiencing the training sessions, you’ll have the opportunity to ask Dr. Allender your questions in a live, interactive Q&A session.
