There are two tracks for the Lay Leader Certification Program.
Lay Leader Certificate Track
Perfect for church elders, group leaders, and more, the Lay Leader Certificate provides students with the skills to grow their ability to do ministry, utilizing the Allender approach.
Advanced Counseling Certification
Designed for the working professional therapist, the Advanced Counseling Certification gives students a firm grounding in the Allender therapeutic model, furthering their skills in working with trauma and abuse victims.
Learn moreThe Lay Leader Certificate is designed to provide you with a fundamental understanding of the Allender methodology. It will identify the complex issues of personal story, and will explore how to more effectively engage these issues through a narrative framework within relationships.
You will learn directly from Dr. Allender in the classroom through teaching and by watching him conduct therapy. You will also receive personal mentoring from The Allender Center teaching staff in small group settings that are catered to your specific skill level and realm of work.

Our training process will enable you to:
- Engage your own story in a way that allows you to better grieve and learn from your suffering in order to be transformed to love others
- Grow your heart to become more open, full, strong, and clear in the way you operate in leadership
- Develop paradigms for helping others consider their story in light of the gospel story
- Mature in habits that will enable you to remain faithful and powerful in dealing with the weariness and sadness that comes in any meaningful spiritual warfare
- Learn to enter death in other people’s life through learning to understand the death in your own story
- Grow in your capacity and skill to facilitate the group process and individual engagements
- Learn to steward difficult stories and help others through the healing process
- Identify the specific giftings you will bring to a group or individual and learn to use those gifts with precision and grace

This program is designed to reach a broad audience of people who interact with people individually, communally, or in group settings. This program will be helpful for:

Can’t join us for this yearlong certificate? Additional options for short-term training and personal development that you may find particularly helpful are:
Participants in the Lay Leader Certificate will receive 75 seat hours of training during the program year (45 hours of teaching, 30 hours of group work). You will receive a certificate of completion at the end of the year stating the number of seat hours you earned. It will be up to the participant to apply for recognition of the CEU credit with their licensing agency. The Allender Center will not be held responsible if individual state or any other professional licensing boards do not recognize the requested CEUs.
Faculty
Dr. Dan Allender
Dr. Allender received his Master of Divinity from Westminster Theological Seminary and his Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from Michigan State University. Dan taught in the Biblical Counseling Department of Grace Theological Seminary for seven years (1983-1989). From 1989-1997, Dan worked as professor in the Master of Arts in Biblical Counseling program at Colorado Christian University, Denver, Colorado. Currently, he serves as Professor of Counseling at The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology. He travels and speaks extensively to present his unique perspective on sexual abuse recovery, love & forgiveness, worship, and other related topics. Dan is the author of The Wounded Heart and The Healing Path and has co-authored several books with Dr. Tremper Longman (Intimate Allies, The Cry of the Soul, Bold Love and Bold Purpose).
Allender Center Teaching Staff
This group of men and women has graduated from The Seattle School of Theology & Psychology and are currently practicing professionals in their field. They have spent a year of post graduate working being trained by Dr. Allender and are the facilitators for all The Allender Center workshops.
